Bhutan's visa system is deliberately simple for travellers, because almost all of the paperwork is handled on your behalf by a licensed operator.
Who needs a visa
All foreign nationals except citizens of India, Bangladesh and the Maldives require a visa to enter Bhutan.
How the process actually works
- You book a tour or arrange your stay through a licensed Bhutanese operator or hotelier (this is where Host Your Tour's listed operators come in).
- You send the operator your passport details and trip information.
- The operator submits your visa application electronically through Bhutan's official online system, alongside payment of the visa fee and your Sustainable Development Fee.
- A visa clearance letter is issued, usually within a few working days.
- You carry the clearance letter with you; the actual visa stamp is affixed on arrival in Bhutan (Paro airport or a land border crossing).
Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals
No visa is required. Indian nationals need a valid passport or voter ID card; Bangladeshi and Maldivian nationals need a valid passport. Entry permits are still arranged through a local operator.

- Independent visa applications directly to a Bhutanese embassy are not how the system works for leisure travel — it goes through your operator.
- Visa fees and processing timelines can change, so always confirm current figures with your chosen operator before booking flights.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.
